The Creative Class: Brooklyn Cartoons

Oct 12, 2017

Meet Brooklyn Cartoons. The Instagram account responsible for shining a satirical light on millennial lifestyle. Conceived by artist and designer Emmet Truxes, Brooklyn Cartoons acts as both an observer and a mirror to a demographic who gets a bad rep for appearing to prioritize taking the perfect selfie. Emmet has found his niche in a community of Instagram accounts where content is passed around like Buzzfeed’s quiz at work that tells you what kind of pizza you are. His content and original illustrations stand out for his clever depiction of an insatiable group impacted by technology and a refusal to settle like generation’s past. With a newly released book aptly titled You Look Better Online, DSTLD sat down with Emmet to discuss his career, creative process, and what’s next for his brand.

DSTLD’s Jean History 101

Aug 01, 2017

Today, jeans are a global symbol - garments with equal appeal across class lines, and across borders. From the legs of ranchers to rock stars and vintage collectors to designer devotees, no other piece of clothing is as ubiquitous or as universally cool as a good pair of jeans. But the journey of fabric that’s come to represent American spirit and innovation actually started centuries ago in its birthplaces of Nîmes, France (the word “denim” is thought to have evolved from “de Nîmes”), and Genoa, Italy. Only around the turn of the 20th century did jeans catch on in the United States - in large part due to a scrappy dry goods entrepreneur from the Old World, and an imaginative tailor who’d change fashion forever.

The Creative Class: RAC

Jul 18, 2017

Tall with a boyish look and bright blue eyes, André Allen Anjos is exactly what you might expect when meeting a DJ and producer responsible for some of the best nuanced remixes of indie songs. He’s charmingly unassuming and authentic; a self-proclaimed introvert whose passion for his craft is clearly palpable. Originally from Portugal, Anjos moved to Illinois for college and soon after founded RAC, otherwise known as Remix Artist Collective. He began offering up his services - cold call style - to various independent artists and bands. His first big break? A remix of The Shins’ “Sleeping Lessons” off their 2007 album Australia. After a decade of hard work, Anjos won his first Grammy for Best Remixed Recording, becoming the first Portuguese artist to solidify a spot in music history.
