“CARA DISCLOTHED” BECOMES CARA DSTLD

Jun 13, 2014

Nevermind the genetically blessed body, high cheekbones, glowing skin and pouty lips… Cara Santana earnestly tells us:  She’s not a model. [Riiiiight.] Either way,  this Texas-born beauty is making a mark on the current conversation in fashion, thanks to her stylish and much buzzed-about blog, Cara Disclothed.

High Rise Slim Jeans in Dusk

Her patented mix of California cool and straightforward sophistication couple seamlessly for a nonpareil style that makes her an obvious DSTLD darling. And with a big screen debut slated [the indie horror film Reunion, dropping in October], Cara is a beautiful one to watch. She took time from writing, tastemaking and sidewalk-strutting to sit down and talk shop with us.

Below, Cara on everything from right-now street style to overcoming bad habits to Dexter the dog.

My name is…

Cara Santana

But my friends call me…

Care Bear because I’m the most sensitive person you’ll ever meet

I came from…

El Paso, Texas and moved to Los Angeles 12 years ago

But I feel most at home when…

As long as I’m with Dexter (Ed. note: Cara’s pooch) and Jesse (her boyfriend, actor Jesse Metcalfe), I feel comfortable anywhere.

Astrological sign…

Leo

Current mental status…

I’m feeling great now that summer is here and it’s the perfect time to travel and be outdoors. Summer for me just feels like an opportunity to rejuvenate, so I’m feeling very optimistic about the next three months.

Few people know that…

For 27 years I’ve bitten my nails and in the last six months I finally stopped biting them! They are now long and beautiful – the nails I’ve always dreamed of!

When I’m not modeling…

I’m an actress with a fashion blog, Cara Disclothed. My blog is 9 months old – it’s my baby! The unique thing about my site is I actually only use paparazzi pictures that I take from the Internet. People were always asking where did you get that, or why did you style that this way and I wanted to have an open dialogue about fashion because it’s sort of portrayed as this unattainable goal. We get dressed everyday no matter what, so why not make fashion an easy, open conversation and get everyone involved?

I would never…

skydive. I’m terrified of anything that has any remote risk involved. Even traveling, flying on a plane, takes every ounce of willpower. And no frosted lipstick – ever.

I’m a DSTLD girl because…

I love comfort, but I never want to compromise style, which is why I love the DSTLD aesthetic and the jeans themselves; they’re fashionable and live-in-everyday comfortable at the same time.

My favorite summer denim trend is….

White denim! I couldn’t wait for the [DSTLD] shoot so I could get my hands on the new Forever White skinnies. I think they’re so chic and a great alternative for the season.

My closet is full of…

It’s very organized – first of all – color-coordinated and super eclectic. Sometimes I change clothes three times a day depending on how I feel. I think my blog has allowed me to take bigger risks. I was so concerned for a while about the way I looked and what I was wearing, I now see it as something experimental and fun; It’s opened my creativity.

It may be 2014, but I wish I lived in…

Totally the 1920s. Give me a sparkle and a feather and I’m good to go.

Guilty Pleasure…

Reality television. I love Basketball Wives and Love and Hip-hop; the good ones.

In my purse you can always find…

Chapstick. I’m big on lip moisturizing.

Best beauty secret…

Always wash your face at night, no matter how tired you are. I also don’t believe in fancy products. Slap on some Cetaphil night and day and get on with it.

Most useful advice I ever got…

Any positive quality in extreme can become your biggest detriment so be conscious of that.

I would describe my personal style as…

Feminine, modern, and comfortable. You’ll never see me in something I can’t sit down in.

My first or greatest fashion memory…

I went to a private prep school growing up where you had to wear these plaid skirts and white shirts, so I would do anything I could to stand out. I would wear vests or knee-high stockings or crazy shoes, and that’s how I realized you can really create an identity for yourself strictly by what you’re wearing and make an impression with how you look. I could create who I was for that day or that moment solely by what I put on my body. You walk into a room and people judge you strictly by what you’re wearing – there’s a lot of power in that.

When I wake up in the morning…

I have to have a cup of coffee. First things first.

If my life were a TV show it would be…

A multi-camera sitcom. I live with my boyfriend and my dog and there are a lot of personalities in one house.

The best part about my denim is…

It goes with everything. 100 percent versatility. You can dress it up, make it casual, go out and have lunch. You can wear it anytime and all the time.

My style icon is…

I don’t have an icon exactly, but I definitely gather inspiration from women that I respect. I think anyone who is willing to take a risk and step outside of a box and create an identity for themselves without the incumbermant of the opinions of others is something I really respect. Katherine Hepburn, Coco Chanel, Cate Blanchette, even Hillary Clinton all take risks and aren’t apologetic for it.

My mom always told me…

Make sure that you always look like you. You don’t ever want to see a photo of yourself and not recognize who you are. I’ll always remember that.

I can’t stand trends like…

The bad seventies recreation of Woodstock, I’m done with it. Everything looks like cheap knockoffs. Don’t get me wrong, I love the seventies… but that festival vibe. Seriously, just go away.
