The Rhode[s] To Success

Oct 28, 2014

Kerry Rhodes - acclaimed NFL football player, founder of youth support group The RHODES Foundation, and now Hollywood entrepreneur - demonstrates that the road to success is never set in stone. With his recent move to Tinseltown, DSTLD was lucky enough to spend the morning getting to know Rhodes and experience his passion for life, creativity, and giving back. Read on for an exclusive on Rhodes’ past, present, and future.

DSTLD: Did you always know you wanted to be a football player? When did you start playing football?

Rhodes: I started football at the age of nine but football was never my first love. I was blessed with the talent to play and really enjoyed my time playing.

DSTLD: Out of college, you were drafted by the Jets. Were you a Jets fan growing up in Long Island? If so, what was it like to play for your ‘team’?

KR:  I wasn’t a Jets fan growing up [laughs]. I was a fan of the 49ers in the 80s and 90s when they were ridiculously good. I mean, I remember one year in the 90s when I’m sure they had at least six Pro Bowl-ers on their defense alone! Sick.

DSTLD: Describe a day in the life of Kerry.

KR: A day in the life of Kerry Rhodes right now is waking up 6:00 am to get in an early work out to start the day. Next I’ll go get a little maintenance on my battered body before going home to shower and either cook or go eat breakfast. Then I head to my production company’s office [The Comeback Kids] for morning meetings and to discuss all of our pending and future projects. At night I’ll meet up with friends for a movie or a drink maybe. I’m in bed by 10:00 pm usually [laughs].

DSTLD: You’re an avid supporter of youth development. Tell us about The RHODES Foundation.

KR: The youth are really our future and I’m very big on their happiness and development. The RHODES Foundation has been around since 2005 and has changed through the years. My first initiative was to further kids’ education and help them go to college. Now it’s about making sure they are healthy, so I have teamed up with Now Let’s Get Fit. Our goal is to help kids become physically active and introduce them to things other than video games and social media. It’s something I’m really passionate about.

DSTLD: You were voted Top 10 Most Stylish NFL Player - define your personal style.

KR: My style varies on my moods. Usually it’s very casual - a burn out tee, jeans, and a pair of Vans is my day to day uniform. When it comes to an event, though, my suit game is not one to play with [smiles].

DSTLD: What are words that you live by?

KR: The words I live by daily are “if God brings you to it, he will bring you through it.”

DSTLD: You recently moved to LA - what are some of your favorite things to do here?

KR: My favorite things to do in LA right now are to work. That’s the reason I’m here! Getting my production company rolling and a movie is #1 on my ledger.

DSTLD: Lakers or Clippers?

KR: Neither Lakers nor Clipper. I’m a Dallas Maverick fan [laughs]. Don’t hate me LA, I love you!
